Middle School Batik.
Batik is a type of artwork using cloth, wax-resist dyeing technique and fabric dye. I personally learned the art of Batik when traveling in Bali, Indonesia. A local batik artist and his father taught me while I was traveling. What a gift and I have made sure to share it with my students.
Students apply wax to fabric using tjanting tools of various sizes depending on detail desired and brushes. Dye is applied on top of the wax and this layering process can be repeated. Near the end - wax can be painted on the entire work and then dipped completely into dye to creating "cracking". The final step is to iron all wax from the work.
A 7th grade student is applying hot wax to her fabric using a tjanting tool. She can then paint colored dye inside each of those areas and the colors will not mix. Her very last step will be to iron out the wax. She will layer her batik in-between news paper, iron on top and the heat from the iron will melt the wax into the paper.
Here a 7th grade student is painting her batik using the variety of dyes available. You can see in the background a swatch showing the students what the colors will turn out to be like.
